The Toughest NISM V-A Chapters (and How to Beat Them)
Not all 12 chapters are equal enemies. Based on question complexity and where mock-takers consistently lose marks, four areas stand out:
- Ch. 4 — Legal & Regulatory Framework (10%): PMLA reporting rules, SEBI regulations with clause-level details, FATCA/CRS. Dense memorisation with tricky look-alike options.
- Ch. 8 — Taxation (4%): small weight, disproportionate difficulty — especially Fund-of-Funds taxation and equity vs non-equity classification rules.
- Ch. 9 — Investor Services (15%): the highest-weight chapter, full of operational specifics: minor-to-major conversions, PoA limits, dormant folios, nomination rules.
- Ch. 12 — Scheme Selection (15%): applied judgment questions where two options look defensible.
The strategy
Chapters 9 + 12 = 30% of your paper, and both punish superficial reading. Drill them with chapter-wise questions until your accuracy crosses 75%. Chapter 4 rewards flashcard-style memorisation of regulators, thresholds and reporting duties.
