Introduction to Research Analyst Profession

1.1  Primary Role of a Research Analyst (RA)

• SEBI (Research Analysts) Regulations, 2014 definition: an RA is a person who, for consideration, is engaged in the business of providing research services — this includes a part-time RA.
• RA function = Research (collecting data: macro/micro-economic, industry, company-specific from govt/RBI statistics, global agencies like IMF/ADB/World Bank, industry journals, annual reports/regulatory filings, management meetings, plant visits, market surveys) + Analysis (processing data into a buy/hold/sell decision).
• Analysis blends qualitative factors (operational efficiency, competitiveness, management quality/work ethics) and quantitative factors (revenues, costs, profitability, risk).

1.1.1  Categories of Research Analysts

• Sell-side Analyst: publish reports publicly with buy/hold/sell calls + price targets; work for investment banking/broking/advisory firms.
• Buy-side Analysts: work for asset managers (mutual funds, hedge funds, pension funds, AIFs, FPIs, PMS) — reports are for internal consumption only, not public.
• Independent Research Analysts: work for boutique/research-only firms separate from full-service investment firms, sell research on a subscription basis to investors/institutions/investment bankers/regulators/exchanges; also do customized research (investment, competitive landscape, M&A).

1.2  Primary Responsibilities

• Understanding the Economy: macro factors (national income, inflation, interest rate, unemployment), fiscal/monetary policy, FDI/FPI flows, savings-investment patterns, global export-import linkages to GDP. (Detailed in Ch.5.)
• Understanding Industry: regulatory environment, business models, competition, demand-price sensitivity, consumer behaviour. (Detailed in Ch.6.)
• Understanding Companies: Qualitative (management quality, brand power, employee competence, customer satisfaction, business-model strengths/weaknesses) + Quantitative (financial statements, cash flows, production/capacity utilisation, market share). (Detailed in Ch.7 & 8.)

1.3  Principles of Interaction with Companies/Clients

• Pre-meeting research: study products/industry/competitors and prior annual reports before any management meeting — such access is infrequent, so preparation is essential.
• Independence & Neutrality: opinions must be unbiased, fact-based, not swayed by management's framing; RAs must also ensure management does not disclose non-public information to them.
• Network: value can come from non-top-management contacts who understand day-to-day operations, plus competitors/suppliers/distributors.
• Client communication guidelines: realistic, fact-based recommendations (not optimistic/pessimistic bias); simple/clear/concise written reports; mandatory disclosure of conflicts of interest (e.g. RA holding shares of the subject company); assumptions clearly stated; jargon avoided or explained.
• Recording devices may be used in interviews/client calls only with prior consent.

1.4  Desired Qualities of a Research Analyst

• Comfort with numbers, strong Excel/data-analysis skills, clarity in financial concepts, ability to read/comprehend financial statements, ability to ask pertinent questions, attention to detail, strong written and verbal communication skills.
