1.1 Financial Goals & Goal Setting

Planning must start with "why" (the purpose), not "which product" — financial objectives become financial goals once an amount and timeline are attached.
Goal-setting steps: (1) identify life events, (2) classify by importance — critically important/responsibility vs dream vs good-to-have, (3) assign timeline (immediate/near/medium/long term), (4) assign amount, inflation-adjusted.

"Saving" shares its root with "safe" — primary goal is capital safety. "Investing" primarily targets profit/return, with a risk-return trade-off.
Saving precedes investing: reduced consumption creates savings, which then get invested — two steps of one process, not opposites.
Factors to evaluate any investment: Safety, Liquidity, Returns (current income + capital gains), Convenience, Ticket size, Taxability of income, Tax deduction available (usually trades off against a lock-in).

1.3 The Four Asset Classes

Equity & bonds exist only in financial form; real estate & commodities can be physical or financial.
Equity/real estate/commodities = ownership assets (uncertain future cash flows); bonds = lending assets (contracted cash flows).

1.4 Investment Risks

Inflation risk — erodes purchasing power. Liquidity risk — e.g. real estate (weeks/months to sell), locked-in FDs/PPF. Credit risk — possibility of delayed/defaulted principal or interest. Market/price risk — broad market risk cannot be diversified away; company-specific risk can be. Interest rate risk — bond prices move inversely to interest rates; longer maturity = higher sensitivity.
